Project Description: The Nazareth Area School District, a long-time client was in need of constructing a major new facility to serve their growing community. Architecture FURST was counted on to use its experience with the District to design their new $52 million Nazareth Area Middle School. The 1,000 student middle school will contain 7th and 8th grade students. The Board of School Directors requested the project be designed to achieve a silver rating under guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The building's massing and design makes strong references to the historic buildings constructed by the original Moravian settlers who located in Nazareth, PA in the mid-17th century. The use of red brick and local field stone was common to surviving buildings. Sited on 22 acres, it also contains a parking lot for the adjacent high school and an all-weather track and practice field. The plan is organized around a central administrative core, state of the art media center and cafeteria. The 2–story classroom wings for each grade level extend east-west to maximize the day lighting benefits. The physical education wing contains a 1,000 seat gymnasium, locker and team room and life fitness center. Sharing a common lobby are the auditorium and related arts wing that includes drama, music and technical education programs. The 2 story, 229,000 square foot school also includes an 8 lane competitive swimming pool and locker rooms for use by the entire district and public. |
