Project Description:
The Colonial IU 20 is one of 29 intermediate units throughout Pennsylvania, which were created to provide services to school districts in ways that create economies of scale, cost savings, and better efficiencies in the delivery of important programs and services to children, especially those with special needs. It also plays an important role in providing substantial support services to the administrators and teachers in the districts that comprise IU 20.
The IU-20 serves 13 school districts and 3 career and technical centers in Northampton, Monroe, and Pike Counties that contain 79,000 public school children; 9,000 non-public school children; and 7,000 professional staff in a service region of almost 1,200 square miles.
This new Academy provides specialized education programs to at-risk and severely handicapped students from ages 14 – 21 in a single location. The facility was designed to stimulate these students by intentionally avoiding the ‘red brick’ schoolhouse and traditional school approach. The building contains administration, general classrooms, technical education, special education and independent living skills rooms, media center, art room, multi-purpose room, kitchen and support areas.
The IU-20 also provides transportation for all students from their home districts. A free-standing transportation facility with offices for its director, staff, bus driver training, service and wash bay was also constructed on the site to provide maintenance of the fleet of vehicles. |
